THE DEVELOPMENT OF FIBER CHARACTERISTIC DISTRIBUTIONS IN MECHANICAL PULP REFINING

Five years of research has generated the BINmethod, by which the distribution of fiber bonding ability can be measured. The BIN-method was used for evaluating the fiber development processes of HC- and LC-refining. Further, different refiner types in HC-refining, CD and DD-refiners, were evaluated. Full scale evaluations of TMP-processes indicate that there are fundamental differences in fiber development between HC- and LC-refining. LCrefining does not seem to affect the fiber wall to the same extent as HC-refining, measured for example as external fibrillation or fiber wall thickness. Comparisons between CD- and DD-refiners show that the DD-refiners develop the fiber wall to a higher degree than the evaluated CD-refiners, compared at the same fiber length.
