OPTIMIZATION OF SELECTIVE REFINING OF SULFONATED LONG FIBRES FROM JACK PINE: FIBRE CHARACTERISTICS
In this paper, modeling was performed to study the effect of sulfonation conditions on fibre properties of the long-fibre fractions of Jack pine thermomechanical pulp during selective refining. Then, three different chemimechanical pulping procedures were compared: sulfonation of long fibres after fractionation, interstage whole-pulp sulfonation and chip sulfonation during primary stage refining (CTMP process). The results showed that various sulfonation conditions had different impacts on the fibre properties of the longfibre fraction. Sulfonation associated with selective refining required less energy and developed fibres more efficiently than the sulfonation of chips or whole pulp.
