BAR CROSSING FORCES IN A TMP REFINER
Local force and temperature were measured in a pilot TMP refiner, with the objective of identifying the magnitude of the mechanical forces acting on the fibres. The average normal peak forces measured over a range of refining conditions were between 0.5 and 8.5 N. This corresponds to normal stresses in the range of 50 to 460 kPa. Increasing the speed of the refiner rotor led to a decrease in the forces in the inner part of the refiner and an increase in the middle section. There was no clear difference between the refining stages at similar specific energy.
