IMPROVEMENTS OF REFINER PERFOR-MANCE USING FLOW MODELING AND OPTIMIZATION
Chip refining has been modeled with a fluid dy-namical model, where refiner grooves are treated as one-dimensional channels. 1D conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy are solved for a mul-tiphase flow. Simulations show that stator segments with higher bar angle or shallower grooves reduce backflow considerably. Multi objective optimization with the specific energy consumption and the specific refining intensity as the performance criteria predict up to 10 % savings in costs without harming the quality.
