LOAD ANALYSIS FOR HIGHCONSISTENCY CONICAL REFINERS
The geometrical configuration of the conical zone in high-consistency conical refiners may permit torque to be generated by centrifugal force and thus assist in motor load development. In such a case, control of this type of machine would differ from a disc refiner where the entire motor load depends upon the axial hydraulic thrust. Evidence for this possibility has been found in the analysis of commercial operating data for conical refiners, but such a mechanism does not explain the response of motor load to consistency. Thus, while the primary means of loading may be provided by centrifugal force, the level of motor load attainable was found to depend upon the mass of fibre within the refining zone.
