ENERGY-QUALITY RELATIONS WITHIN REFINER PLATE-GAP

Pulp quality development as a function of specific energy consumption across the plate gap of a first stage TMP-refiner (Metso RGP 44) was shown for two bi-directional rotor plate designs. New information was released on how the chips are defibrated and fibers fibrillated at different rims of the refining plate. The analysis revealed the areas of the refining surface that work efficiently and the areas that just consume energy without fiber development. The tangential shear force and temperature measurement system together with in situ plate gap pulp sampling gave valuable physical information on the relations between energy efficient wood defibration and refiner plate configurations.
