TWO-STAGE BLEACHING FOR MAXIMUM CTMP BRIGHTNESS

There is an increased demand for CTMP pulps of high brightness for production of different kinds of paper and board grades. The raw material used today, especially in China, is based mainly on different types of hardwood species such as eucalyptus, poplar and acacia. Often, hardwood CTMP pulp used for production of printing and writing grades competes with chemical pulps, so the brightness and bleach response of the CTMP pulps is an important issue. From this perspective, finding a suitable process solution for meeting the wide range of grades and raw material is quite a challenge. This paper demonstrates that two-stage (PMCPHC) peroxide bleaching of CTMP can reduce production costs while producing brightness levels of 85％ ISO or more for CTMP produced in a pilot plant from Chinese raw materials.
