EFFECT OF HYP FINES ON FILLER RETENTION AND PAPER FORMATION OF HYP-CONTAINING PAPER SHEETS

The hardwood high-yield pulp (HYP) has been found an increasing application in value-added paper grades. However, the concern still remains on how the fines introduced from the HYP would affect the wet-end operation of papermaking process and the properties of paper sheet containing HYP. In this study, the effect of HYP fines on filler retention was determined based on the first pass retention (FPR) and first pass ash retention (FPAR) in a dynamic drainage jar (DDJ), and the contribution of HYP fines to the HYP-containing paper sheet formation was evaluated by a paper formation analyzer. The results show that the HYP fines can have a positive effect on filler retention, because they have large specific surface area and high ionic functional groups than the bleached kraft pulp (BKP) fines. The paper sheet formation can benefit from the HYP fines when more fines are retained in the fiber matrix of paper sheet with the application of retention aids.
