PTICAL BRIGHTENER AGENT (OBA)EFFICIENCY IN HYP-CONTAINING FINE PAPER

Optical brightening agent (OBA) has been widely used in paper industry as a cost effective way of improving the brightness and whiteness of paper products. The increasing substitution of high-yield pulp (HYP) in the production of fine papers has created challenges for the OBA effectiveness and efficiency. This paper reviews the recent OBA research efforts on HYP-containing uncoated fine paper grades. It focuses on the main factors affecting OBA efficiency in both the wet end and size press processes, including the brightness and whiteness of the pulp furnish, UV competitors, OBA retention, quenching effects and OBA migration at the size press. Some new technologies to improve OBA efficiency are also discussed. Possible future research needs are identified for the purpose of further improving the OBA efficiency of HYP-containing uncoated paper grades.
