APPLICATION OF AKD EMULSION TO SIZING OF APMP- CONTAINING FURNISH
The effectiveness of AKD sizing is decreased to the presence of anionic trashes in the high yield pulps (HYP). In this paper, some anionic trash catchers, which also work as sizing promoters, as well as some retention systems, were studied to improve performance of AKD sizing in APMP- containing system. The results showed that adding polyethylenimine (PEI) as a sizing promoter in the emulsifying process at its optimum dosage of0.03 wt%, the AKD sizing efficiency was increased by 76%. The positive effects of a modified chitosan and polydiallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC) were also evident. At 0.4% chitosan and 0.6% PDADMAC, the sizing efficiency was increased by 140% and 97.9%, respectively. The dual system consisting of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM)/ bentonite micro-particle retention system showed that at the optimum dosage of 0.03 wt% (for CPAM) and 0.4 wt% (for bentonite), the size retention and sizing efficiency of the pulp were increased by 7% and 197.5%, respectively.
