CHARACTERISTICS OF BCTMP AND ITS EFFECTS ON ART BASE PAPER
Six BCTMPs from different manufacturers were collected and studied. The characteristics of the pulps, such as fiber length distribution, morphology, the ratio of O/C of the fiber surface, carboxyl content, zeta potential, cationic demand etc. were studied. A contrastive hardwood kraft pulp was studied as well. The results showed that: (1) the freeness degree of BCTMPs (150~380 mL) was lower than that of hardwood kraft pulp, which was 560ml; (2) the weighted average fiber length of BCTMPs was in the range of 0.67~0.83mm, similar with that of hardwood kraft pulp, which was 0.65mm; (3) according to the FQA test results, the fine fragment content of BCTMP was much higher than hardwood kraft pulp; (4) compared with the hardwood kraft pulp, the BCTMPs had higher carboxyl content, higher specific conductance and cationic demand, but with lower O/C ratio, lower Zeta potential and lower strength; (5) the high fine content and high lignin content of BCTMPs surface leaded poor paper strength and poor retention, even though they had high carboxyl content.
