INFLUENCES OF INTEGRATED RECYCLING AND TEMPO-MEDIATED OXIDATION ON THE PROPERTIES OF THERMOMECHANICAL PULP FIBERS

The influences of TEMPO-mediated oxidation on recycled thermomechanical pulp (TMP) were investigated in our study, the impacts of recycling process on TEMPO-mediated oxidized TMP properties were studied as well. TEMPO-mediated oxidation was an effective way for recycled TMP enhancement, the tensile and burst index of oxidized TMP fibers improved remarkably due to the introduction of carboxylic acid groups, while it had some negative impacts on the tear index, zero span tensile index and the optical properties. Interetingly, the oxidation-recycling (O-R) procedure took remarkable adverse impact on TMP compared with the recycling-oxidation (R-O) procedure, the tensile, burst, tear strength as well as the zero span tensile strength dropped sharply when the TEMPO-mediated oxidized TMP was used for recycling, and all the strength properties decreased with the increasing recycle times. The O-R procedure had the similar adverse impact on pulp brightness as well, although the opacity improved after O-R treatment. The TEMPO-mediated oxidation coule be a useful method to enhance the recylced TMP properties, however, the properties of oxidated TMP dropped sharply when it was used for further recycling.
