REDUCED SPECIFIC ENERGY AND QUALITY VARIABILITY THROUGH ADVANCED CONTROL AT NORSKE SKOG ALBURY

Declining newsprint demand and increasing production costs present a major challenge for modern TMP mills. High efficiency is required to maintain profitability. Advanced control and optimization systems can help with these issues. Unfortunately, many mills lack the resources needed to implement them. Norske Skog’s Albury mill was exploring options for control and optimization of its four line, 173,000 ton per year TMP mill. In the spring of 2009 Metso and Norske Skog partnered to install such a system. To distribute risk and minimize initial capital requirements, a low cost trial was done on two of the refiner lines. Work began on the trial system in April 2009 and the full trial system was commissioned by June. The two line trial system included software sensors for pulp quality, model predictive control of primary and secondary refiners, production rate optimization, and tools for monitoring system performance. Production rate, specific energy, and pulp quality variability baselines were established for the trial lines for comparison with optimized performance. In November 2009 it was agreed that the trial had produced significant, measurable results. Through production optimization, the average production on the trial lines increased by 6.0-6.5%. This combined with refiner level optimization resulted in a 2.9-4.0% reduction in specific energy. At the same time, pulp quality variability (as measured by the freeness standard deviation from the Pulp Expert analyzer) decreased by more than 30%. Due to the clear success, the trial system was converted to a permanent installation in the summer of 2010 and the scope expanded to include the other two refiner lines. Results from the full installation have been consistent with the trial and the system is delivering sustained benefits.
