NEW TMP-LINE IMPROVES PULP QUALITY AND REDUCES ENERGY CONSUMPTION

In August 2008 a new TMP line started at Holmen Paper Braviken Paper mill. A development project has been carried out on the new TMP line. The purpose of this project was to evaluate three process steps (chip pre-treatment, high consistency (HC) refining and low consistency (LC) refining) separately and in combinations. The main focus was to minimize the refining energy while maintaining pulp quality. The mill scale study indicates that increased intensity in HC refining in combination with sulphite pre-treatment and/or LC refining can be used to reduce specific refining energy with up to 30 per cent compared to single disc refining. When the intensity is increased by means of double disc refining, the fibre length is reduced compared to single disc refining. Nevertheless, we have seen that the lower fibre length of DD pulp has no negative effect on runability of the paper machines at the mill.
