Influence Factors and Range of The Weibull Shape Parameter
The Weibull shape parameter describes the life spread of items. Manufacturing quality and operational conditions impact the life spread. Test data of new items reflect the impact of manufacturing quality and the field data reflect the impact of both manufacturing quality and operational conditions. The shape parameter obtained from test data will be larger than the one obtained from field data for nominally identical items. In this paper, we quantify the difference between the shape parameters obtained from test and field data for different areas of application. The analysis is based on samples of the value of the shape parameter from real life examples in the literature. A main finding is that the shape parameter increases with the year of product manufacture and hence implies that it reflects product quality to some extent.
