Optimal Redundant Systems for Works with Random Processing Time

This paper studies the optimal redundant policies for a manufacturing system with jobs of random processing times. The units of the parallel systems and standby systems are subject to stochastic failures during the production process. First, a job with only one work is considered for both redundant systems and the expected cost rates are obtained. Next, the production processes of N tandem works are formulated for parallel and standby systems respectively and the expected cost functions are also derived. The optimal number of redundant units for N works and the optimal number of jobs for n redundant units which minimize the expected cost functions are discussed analytically. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the optimization problems.
