Continuous Performance Criteria Based on Fuzzy-probabilistic Models
A common experience indicates that structures do not loose their ability to comply with specified performance requirements abruptly at a distinct point of the performance indicator but continuously within a certain transition interval. This continuous-state performance reliability is analyzed using fuzzyprobabilistic concepts. In addition methods of fuzzyprobabilistic optimization may be applied to specify limiting values of performance indicators and to identify appropriate reliability level to be used in operational design for structural performance. As an example serviceability requirements imposed on water retaining concrete structures are investigated in detail. The objective function is expressed in terms of the total costs considering the reinforcement ratio as a decision parameter. It appears that fuzzyprobabilistic models provide rational and valuable background information concerning limits for cr ack width and adequate reliability level.
