Systems Failure Modeling under Both Degradation And Shocks

Degradation and traumatic shocks are two common competing risks that cause failures of systems/products. In this paper, we review two approaches for modeling systems failure time distribution arising from the combined effects of degradation of a performance characteristic and multiple random shocks with large magnitude. The arrival pattern of random shocks is assumed to be a Poisson process, while the magnitude of shocks is a random variable. Simulation study is carried out to examine the performance of these two models. The results reveal that both two approaches can fit the data well.
