Modeling of CCM in Shanghai Port Area
Shanghai port is the busiest container terminal and largest ocean freight hub in China. It is shown that the container throughput of the Shanghai port reached 29.069 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2010. In such a large number of container transportation, empty container transportation is completely unproductive and the cost of empty containers transportation is huge every year, which has become an urgent problem facing the logistics industry in the Shanghai port area. An effective container management is imminently needed to reduce the huge unproductive transportation cost. In this paper, empty container management in the Shanghai port area is studied in an effort to reduce the unproductive transportation cost of empty containers. A collaborative transportation strategy is proposed to make empty container management more effective, and the collaborative management of empty container is analytically modeled to optimize the empty container operations and reduce the unproductive cost.
