Measuring User Value with a Survey Method: A Case Study Using Smartphones

User experience (UX) is a comprehensive and ambiguous concept that covers usability, affect, and user value. For the last decade, UX has elicited attention in many academic and industrial fields. Recently, studies have been conducted to develop methods for measuring UX and its elements. User value (UV), which is one of the UX elements, can be defined as the users feelings, thoughts, and the worth that the user gains in the usage of a product or service. It is reported that UV consists of five elements: selfsatisfaction, pleasure, sociability, customer need, and attachment. This study designed questionnaire items to measure UV. Human factors professionals developed a total of 41 questionnaire items for smartphone users. Each questionnaire item is corresponding to one UV element. A total of 732 smartphone users participated in the survey based on their own smartphone experiences. As a result of an exploratory factor analysis, 16 questionnaire items were finally selected. The proposed questionnaire is expected to contribute to measuring and validating UX in an efficient and effective manner.
