Touch Key Design for Mobile Devices: Effect of Touch Key Size and Touch Technology
Touch screens are widely used in mobile devices. This study investigated the effect of touch screen technologies and touch key sizes in mobile devices. Two touch screen technologies (capacitive and resistive types) and five touch key sizes (3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 mm) were evaluated. In an evaluation experiment using commercial mobile phones, we collected one objective measure (number of clicks) and three subjective measures (pressing convenience, sense of touch and overall satisfaction) using twenty participants. The experimental task was to press buttons of different sizes using the right thumb. The results showed that the resistive type provided the better performance in terms of the number of clicks, while the subjective measures were not statistically significant. The 3 mm touch keys had the worst performance. The 5 mm touch keys are recommended in terms of the objective measure, while the 9 mm were the best in terms of the subjective measures. The results of this study can be used for designing user interfaces with capacitive and resistive touch screens.
