A Literature Survey on User Experience Evaluation Methods

The objective of this study is to identify appropriate evaluation methods for user experience (UX) elements such as usability, affect, and user value. This objective was accomplished through three steps: (1) collecting and merging evaluation methods, (2) classifying them according to UX elements, and (3) analyzing the characteristics of each method. In the first step, we conducted a literature survey from a variety of research fields. A total of 148 articles were collected from proceedings, dissertations, magazines, reports, and books. From those sources, 52 methods for evaluating several concepts, including service quality and customer satisfaction, as well as UX, were collected. Then, they were merged into a total of 35 methods. Second, we mapped the methods onto UX elements. Finally, we analyzed the evaluation methods and compared their advantages and disadvantages. As a result, we suggested the evaluation methods which could be used as guidelines when evaluating UX. The results of this study provide new ideas for evaluating UX, especially in terms of affect and user value, and are expected to help researchers choose appropriate UX evaluation methods.
