Characteristics of Recreational-Vehicle Ingress and Egress in Field Research and Laboratory Experiment by Video Observation

Most ingress and egress experiments were conducted in laboratory environment. Thus, it has limitation to reflect ingress/egress environment of the real world situation. This study analyzed drivers ingress / egress strategies in real world and laboratory experiment for recreational vehicle. We developed criteria to classify ingress / egress motion. Five body segments (head, torso, hip, right / left foot) were ordered by sequence of entering in or out of the car and similar strategies based on those sequences were grouped. We collected natural ingress / egress motions in daily life ( field research). Total 130 ingress / egress motion data were collected and analyzed with developed criteria. Then, we conducted laboratory experiment. Healthy 40 people (male: 25, female: 15) participated in the experiment and got in and out 5 different size recreational vehicle. The results showed that Right foot - Hip - Torso - Head -Left foot is most popular ingress strategy in both field research and laboratory experiment. However, there were differences between filed research and laboratory experiment in terms of number of groups. Field research had 5 ingress groups and 10 egress groups. Laboratory experiments had 6 ingress groups and 7 egress groups. In field research, people could not fully open the door because of narrow parking lot. However, the spaces in the laboratory experiment were enough to fully open the door which makes easier to ingress / egress. In this paper, we recommend ingress / egress strategies that people use in general for designing ingress/ egress experiment. Also, we suggest variables that must be considered when conducting laboratory experiment related to car ingress/egress.
