A Review on the Theory of System of Systems and Its Applications
Our world is becoming more and more complex, coupled, and interactional. Traditional system engineering (SE) considers that all system components will serve overall goal(s) selflessly, but in most cases, different interest bodies that hold individual perspectives have to cooperate or connect with each other to complete certain complex objectives, thus SE may not be strong enough to deal with these newly situations. To cope with this problem, an important multidisciplinary theory systems of systems (SoSs) has emerged that might be able to deliberate our living world. In this article, the author presents and analyzes existing SoSs concepts and several applications to give a general introduction of SoSs. Based on the background introduction, we preliminarily discuss similarities between supply chain management (SCM) and SoSs and propose that the methods of SCM may be incorporated to deal with SoSs problems.
