OR Projects for Service Innovation of Home Center Chain Stores in Japan

A home center chain corporation in Japan has been collaborated with our OR team in five years to improve their business. The president of the corporation decides to introduce quantitative approach for the remodeling of their business. The projects include the optimal layout of the racks, decision of the quantity of items to be displayed on the racks, reduction of the inventory, the automatic daily shift scheduling of the employers, etc. We formulate the problems as mixed integer programming problems and solve them by optimization software. The systems based on EXCEL have been developed in cooperation with the project members of the corporation to implement our results in the chain stores. The corporation introduces the systems in their hundred twenty chain stores in the central area of Japan. As the result, their business has been improved constantly in these years so that the net profit has increased by 8. 2% from 2009 to 2010.
