A Conceptual Model for Configurable Services Using Ontology: A Case Study for Building Solution Services

Manufacturers are undergoing a transition from being product-focused to service-based. To respond to different kinds of customer needs, services are customized and committed to certain configuration in a paradigm similar with product mass customization. It is therefore important to extend current productbiased configuration models with a service perspective. With the aim of enabling efficient and effective service configuration in a reusable and sharable way, an ontology-based approach for representing service configuration knowledge is presented in this paper. The ontology is formalized using OWL, resulting in well-defined semantics due to the logic semantics of OWL. Configuration constraints are represented in SWRL, a rule language based on OWL. Actual configuration processes are implemented using JESS, a rule engine for the Java platform. The proposed ontology is illustrated with a case study for configuring a specific service called Building Solution.
