Management of AC injuries
Injury to the acromioclavicular (AC) joint is an extremely common injury to the shoulder in sports, particularly in contact sports. In Caves review of the 394 dislocations about the shoulder, 12% occurred at the AC joint. Injury to the joint can occur from either a direct or an indirect mechanism. Direct mechanisms of injury sustained after a blow to the superior aspect of the acromion and causing a shearing of the joint and varying degrees of joint displacement, account for far fewer of these injuries. However, in some of the more moderately displaced indirect injuries, the compression forces may result in more significant long-term sequelae.
