ETHICAL JUDGMENT AND ITS IMPACT ON RESEARCHERS’PERFORMANCE An Empirical Study in China

In this study, ethical judgment and its impact on researcher’s individual performance are examined by using Reidenbach and Robin’s multidimensional ethics scale (MES). A total of 92 researchers sponsored by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality (STCSM) were asked to provide ethical judgment on a scenario by 13-item scales including five ethical theories: moral equity, relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, and deontology. The positive values of means scores on five ethical theories or dimensions show researchers will be more ethical judgment on the actions in this scenario. There are more disagreements among respondents in ethical judgment with relativism and egoism theory than justice and deontology theory. Results show there are weak positive relationships between the individual performance and three of five ethical theories. The performance of ethical group is better than unethical group in five ethical dimensions except deontology theory. In a long term, ethical judgments have positive impact on individual performance. So familiarization with ethical judgment the different ethical theories and its impact on performance can help managers make better informed decisions.
