EXTRACTION OF BIOACTIVE CHEMICALS IN SPRUCE WOOD RESIDUES

Samples of spruce bark and spruce needles (Picea abies) have been extracted with different solvents. The target was to identify major groups of secondary metabolites which can be isolated on a commercial basis. The extraction yield of polyphenols was highest using ASE (accelerated solvent extraction) with etanol/water mixtures. The extraction procedure has been optimized using experimental design (MODDE and CCF). Different methods for analysis of the extracts have been used. Using LC/MS/MS two stilbene glucosides were identified as major components in the spruce bark extracts. In acetone extracts of spruce needles shikimi acid and a cyclitol were identified together with several phenolic compounds.
