Flavonoids represent a group of phenolic compounds which have been recognized to exert a wide range of significant biological and pharmaceutical functions, such as anti-cancer, anti-oxidative, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective properties. Previously, little has been reported by other researchers on the chemical constituents, especially the flavonoids distribution, of Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. var. tomentosa. In this study, flavonoids were extracted with 70% (v/v) aqueous acetone from flower, leaf, seed, outer bark, inner bark and wood of P. tomentosa var. tomentosa, and the total flavonoids content of each part was analyzed by spectrophotometric method. The systematical distribution of flavonoids in the whole tree of P. tomentosa var. tomentosa was thus determined. Results of this work revealed that total flavonoids contents in dried flower, leaf, seed, outer bark, inner bark and wood of P. tomentosa var. tomentosa were approximately 8.6 mg/100 g 14.0 mg/100 g, 3.2 mg/100 g, 41.2 mg/100 g, 35.2 mg/100 g and 21.1 mg/100 g, respectively. This study also exhibited that flavonoids contents in different parts of P. tomentosa var. tomentosa varied considerably, with the maximum content in outer bark 41.2 mg/100 g, whereas seed, yielded the lowest content of flavonoids, only 3.2 mg/100 g.
