POSIDONIA OCEANICA, DATE PALM RACHIS AND ALFA FROM TUNISIA AS SOURCES OF CELLULOSIC FIBRES
Important quantities of date palm rachis and Posidonia oceanica accumulated every year in Tunisia. The rational valorisation of these available renewable resources fits very well with recent sustainable approaches. This study is devoted to the investigation of the chemical composition of these two alternative biomasses. The amounts of extractives in different solvents, the ash content, Klason lignin, hollocellulose content as well as the amount of cellulose were determined according to standard methods. Then, soda-anthraquinone cooking was performed for the delignification of the two residues. The obtained pulps from Posidonia oceanica (40 % o.d of cellulose) and date palm rachis (45 % o.d of cellulose) were characterized: morphological properties, polymerisation degree (DP), total electrical charge as well as chemical composition were assessed. These properties were compared to the properties of a Tunisian alfa pulp that was also fully characterized. Finally, the results of this work clearly demonstrated that Posidonia oceanica and date palms rachis can be considered as a possible alternative source of fibres for cellulose derivatives and/or as lignocellulosic fibres for fibre-reinforced composite materials or papermaking application. For the Tunisian alfa pulp traditionally used in papermaking field, this study showed that new applications may also be envisaged.
