RESEARCH ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF MINERNAL ELEMENTS IN WHEAT STRAW

The distribution of mineral elements in wheat straw was studied by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) attached to scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that, the sorts and content of mineral elements are quite different in various parts of wheat straw. There are two sorts of outer surfaces of wheat stem. The major one is smooth and with longitudinally parallel stripes, and the other one with many granules and stomas. The silicon content in the cuticle is high, over 50%. The Si dot map image of the outer surface is uneven. The silicon content is much higher in the nodes, leaves and ears of wheat straw, and lowest in fibers, about l/30~l/140 of that in the cuticle of wheat stem. Silicon is the key element in the bio-structure of wheat straw. Therefore, it is of great importance to strengthen preparation, develop new pretreatment technology and remove the nodes, leaves, ears and stem cuticles of wheat straw effectively in order to realize the highefficiency cleaner production of wheat straw pulp.
