PREPARATION OF ACTIVATED CARBON BY KOH ACTIVATION ON STRAW LIGNIN

Activated carbons were prepared through chemical activation on lignin from straw pulping precursor using KOH as the chemical agent. Effects of activating temperature, mass ratio of the activating agent to lignin, and activating time on the yield and iodine number of the activated carbons were investigated. The activated carbons were characterized in terms of BET surface area, total-, micro- and mesopore volumes, average pore width, carbon yield and iodine adsorption capacity. The influences of each factor of the synthesis on the properties of the activated carbons were discussed. Experimental results indicated that the optimum conditions were as follow: activated temperature 700 ℃, KOH (40% concentration) to lignin ratio 5:1, activating time 40min. Under the optimum conditions of KOH activation, obtained was the activated carbon with BET surface area of 917 m2/g which included external surface area of 231 m2/g, the amount of methylene blue adsorption was 96mL/g, iodine number was 1180 mg/g and the yield of activated carbon was 18.7%.
