PREPARATION OF THERMO-SENSITIVE HYDROGELS FROM ACRYLATED LIGNIN AND N-ISOPROPYLACRYLAMIDE THROUGH PHOTOCROSSLINKING

A novel thermo-sensitive hydrogel was obtained from acrylated lignin (LM) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) through UV photocrosslinking. The influences of the LM content on the hydrogel properties were investigated in terms of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST), interior morphology, temperature response kinetic, swelling and deswelling kinetics. The swelling ratio of the hydrogels at different temperature showed that these new smart hydrogels were responsive to the changes of external temperature. The DSC data demonstrated that the LCST of the hydrogels reduced with the increased content of LM in the hydrogels. The SEM images showed that increasing LM content resulted in the reduced pore size of the hydrogel. The swelling and deswelling behavior stated that the hydrogel with less LM content exhibited better temperature sensitivity.
