NOVEL LIGNIN BASED BARRIER MATERIAL FOR PACKAGING

In this study, lignin was esterified with palmitic acid and tested for application in coatings of fiber based packaging material. The aim was to improve the barrier properties against water vapor and oxygen of the paperboard. The modified lignin materials were applied by a bar coater on the paperboard and formed a smooth surface on the board material. The ability of the modified lignin samples to act as a moisture barrier was investigated by determining the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). A significant decrease in WVTR was observed for all the lignin coated board samples. Furthermore, the contact angle of the modified lignin coatings was high and stable. For all the investigated lignin coated board samples a significant decrease in oxygen transmission rate (OTR) was observed. According to the results, lignin palmitate has the potential to be developed as a coating material, for example in food packaging applications.
