IN DEPTH STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF MILLED WOOD LIGNIN BY QQ-HSQC AND 31P-NMR
Despite the huge amount of studies performed, the degree of polymerization of lignin is to date not fully understood The authors show here that the degree of polymerization and number average molecular weight of lignin can be calculated when the C9 formula, the amount of phenolic groups and the amount of pinoresinol, diphenylethane and phenolic diphenyl lignin subunits are known. 31P-NMR and 2Dquantitative NMR allow the direct and accurate determination of the phenolic OH groups and all the lignin subunits without suffering from the lack of accuracy typical of wet chemistry methods. Resulting data on the degree of polymerization and number average molecular weight of lignin were not affected by supramolecular aggregation processes.
