PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF LIGNIN-BASED EPOXY RESINS

Lignin-based epoxy resin (LEP) was prepared from acetic acid lignin (AAL). AAL was prepared from the atmospheric acetic acid pulping of eucalyptus chips. AAL was first phenolated with phenol to obtain phenolized lignin (PL). Then PL was epoxidised with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in alkali medium to obtained LEP. Then LEP was mixed with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (E-44) and the mixture was cured with triethylenetetramin (TETA) as the hardener. The initial thermal degradation temperatures (Tds) of the epoxy blends were declined with the increasing LEP content in the mixture. The mass residue at 500 ℃ (MR500) was raised with the increasing LEP content. The adhesive shear strength of the blends was improved with LEP in content of up to 40%, and the maximum occurred at a LEP content of 20%.
