APPLICATION OF WHEAT-STRAW ALKALI LIGNIN IN LPF RESINS AFTER ULTRASONIC ACTIVATION
Wheat-straw alkali lignin is an important by-product in pulp mills in China, but it lacks value-added application. In this article, the effects of different ultrasonic conditions (time: 10min/20min/30min/40min; amplitude: 60/80/100; solution mass ratio (water/lignin, m/m): 20: 1/60: 1/100: 1) on lignin activation were compared, and then the feasibility of using the activated lignin to replace part of phenol (10%/20%/30%/40%) to prepare lignin-phenol- formaldehyde (LPF) resins was explored. The results showed that using ultrasonic can significantly improve the content of phenol hydroxyl of the lignin. The optimum conditions were: time 20min, amplitude 80 and the solution mass ratio 20:1. 20% of phenol was replaced by alkali lignin after ultrasonic treatment (ultralignin) in preparing LPF adhesive. When the adhesive was used to manufacture exterior poplar plywood boards, the bonding strength could meet the requirement of type I plywood according to Chinese standard (GB 9846-2004), which was also comparable to that obtained by phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) adhesives.
