STUDY ON THE SYNTHESIS AND SELF-ASSEMBLY BEHAVIOR OF HYDROPHOBICALLY MODIFIED HYDROXYETHYL CELLULOSE
In this paper, hydrophobically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (HMHEC) was synthesized by the etherificaiton reaction between hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and long chain alkyl bromide. The structure of products was characterized by FT-IR, 1HNMR and viscosimeter, and their self-assembly behavior was observed by the atom force microscope (AFM) and dynamic laser scattering (DLS). The results of FT-IR and 1H-NMR showed that the hydrophobically hydroxyethyl cellulose (HMHEC) was successfully synthesized. In comparison with HEC, the viscosity of hydrophobically modified derivatives was obviously increased. The results of AFM and DLS analysis indicated that the hydrophobically hydroxyethyl cellulose was able to self-assemble in water and form into nano-sized polymeric micelles that are ideal for carrying water-insoluble drugs and functional compounds.
