MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FILMS MADE FROM DIALCOHOL CELLULOSE

Mechanical properties of dialcohol cellulose films prepared by homogeneous periodate oxidation were studied. Dialdehyde cellulose with a high oxidation level (over 90%) was prepared by the oxidation for 12 hours in an aqueous solution of methylol cellulose. By reducing the dialdehyde cellulose with NaBH4, water-soluble dialcohol cellulose which has open ring structure at C2-C3 position was obtained. The dialcohol cellulose was characterized using NMR, FTIR and DSC. The dialcohol cellulose gave a clear and transparent film, which was subjected both to tensile and DMA tests.
