INSIGHT OF METHANOL FORMATION IN KRAFT PULPING PROCESS OF BAMBOO

Methanol formation during kraft pulping of bamboo was investigated by using the headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC). The results indicate that stronger pulping conditions would lead to higher methanol formation. Methanol formation is mainly caused by the degradation of lignin and hemicelluloses, and it correlates to pulp kappa number and pentosan dissolution to some extent. It also reveals that the temperature raising stage in pulping contributes to the majority of methanol formation.
