ALKALINE EXTRACTIVES AND ITS EFFECTS ON BAMBOO SCMP PULP PEROXIDE BLEACHING

Bamboo, widely distributed in the south China, is a great rude material for pulp mills. However production of HYP (high yield pulps) from bamboo is not commercial practice because the pulp is difficult to bleach. Besides high lignin content, extractives, even when present in low amounts in the raw material, might play an important role in HYP pulps bleaching, especially in the higher extractives content materials, thus it is important to study the extractives of bamboo and its effects on the HYP bleaching. This investigation was designed to study the effect of extractives on bamboo SCMP peroxide bleaching and the composition, employed alkaline extraction treatment and GC-MS analysis. Also the components contribute to the bleaching problem were discussed. Results showed alkaline treatment of bamboo SCMP before peroxide bleaching led to the obvious improvement of the bleached pulp brightness, 10.2% maximum at the 3.5% NaOH dosage. UV-Vis analysis of extractives showed significant absorbance around 310 nm and 330 nm. The extractives were composed by short chain aliphatic, monoaryl phenols and fat acids. Monoaryl phenols with the largest amounts were the major compounds in the extractives, and their release from pulp during alkaline treatment, resulted the improvement of peroxide bleached bamboo SCMP brightness.
