IMPROVE WOODCHIP PROPERTIES WITH CARBONATE PRETREATMENT BEFORE SODA PULPING

Pretreatment methods of woodchips have several methods such as pre-steaming, chemicals or both in order to reduce caustic soda for digesting woodchips or increase pulp yield, sodium carbonate solution or green liquor from recausticizing process to produce chemical pulp grade using soda-AQ pulping process. In addition, pretreatment with carbonate enhanced bleachability, increased pulp strength and lowered rejects. Conditions for green liquor were pretreatment temperature of 140°C, time 60 minutes, liquor-towood ratio of 4:1. The pulping yield after screening of pretreatment woodchips pulping was higher 1.7% than the conventional pulping process, was lower 2% as Na2O on dry chips than the conventional pulping. The kappa number of unbleached pulp was 17-19 from conventional control pulping. Pulp viscosity of unbleached pulp from pre-treatment woodchips pulping was higher than the one from conventional pulping about 10%. It means that higher D.P. of cellulose chain of unbleached pulp from pretreatment ,comparable, but lower brightness about 1%~2%ISO if used 10%~15%green liquor because of unburned carbon in green liquor solution, and conventional control pulping was not different so it can achieve brightness target of >85%ISO.
