STUDY ON THE KRAFT PULPING PROPERTIES OF SHORT-ROTATION POPLAR
The short-rotation poplar has a high biomass production in the first several years, and it may be one kind of good fiber source alternatives to meet the requirement of raw materials for China pulp and paper industry. In this study, the chemical components and the kraft pulping properties of five different kinds of short-rotation poplars were determined. The results show that the short-rotation poplars of 03-04-111 and 108 have relatively lower contents of alcohol-benzene extractive and 1% NaOH extractive, and the total lignin content, which are good for their kraft pulping properties. The optimized alkaline dosages are 19% Na2O and 20% sulfide for the kraft cooking of short-rotation poplar. Under these conditions, the pulp yield is about 34%-39% and the kappa number is about 18. The pulping properties of short-rotation poplar marked as 03-04-111 and 108 are better than that of others. There is no big difference of physical properties for five poplar kraft pulps, and the poplar 03-04-111 has relatively better strength properties. The fiber average length of short-rotation poplars is about 0.53-0.6 mm by the L&W fiber tester.
