ALKALINE PULPING AND TCF BLEACHING OF HOT-WATER EXTRACTED BAGASSE
The combination of hemicelluloses extraction with chemical pulping process is a new bio-refinery technology. It allows pulp and paper mills to produce biofuels and chemicals in addition to paper products. Hot water extraction of hemicelluloses from bagasse was performed under the following conditions, using time of 30 min, temperature of 160 °C. The extracted bagasse was subjected to soda and soda-AQ pulping. The results showed that delignification rate of extracted bagasse soda pulping was lower and the alkali consumption was higher than that of standard bagasse soda pulping. Addition of anthraquinone during soda pulping of bagasse significantly improved the delignification efficiency. Two-stage oxygen delignification and TCF bleaching sequences were performed for both pulp made by standard bagasse and extracted bagasse. The study demonstrated that delignification efficiency of the pulp from extracted bagasse was higher compared to the pulp from standard bagasse during oxygen delignification and TCF bleaching, but the pulp from extracted bagasse exhibited lower viscosity than the pulp from standard bagasse.
