APPLICATION OF Mg(OH)2 AS ALKALI SOURCE IN ONE-STAGE APMP PROCESS

Mg(OH)2, as a weak alkali, can be used in the H2O2 bleaching of high yield pulp such as CTMP or TMP, which has been reported in many literatures, however, for the application of Mg(OH)2 as alkali source in APMP process with one-stage pretreatment, there was few reported. In this paper, the efforts were focused on the effects of application of this chemical in single-stage APMP process on resultant pulp properties, including physical and optical properties. Also, the changes of pulp characteristics and the pollution loads of effluents were included in this research. The XPS was used to analysis the change of chemical composition on the fiber surface. The results showed that Mg(0H)2 can be used to partially substitute NaOH as an alkali source of APMP process, and the bulk and light scattering coefficient of pulp handsheet can be improved, while the physical strength and brightness has a decreasing trend with the increasing of substitution ratio of Mg (OH)2 for NaOH. A decrease in pulp strength was observed with a partial Mg(0H)2 substitution, which was caused by i) shorter fiber average length and more fine content, and ii) less removal of hydrophobic materials, such as lignin and extractives. Less COD was produced in the partial Mg (0H)2 substitution APMP process.
