ANTI-PHOTO-YELLOWING OF HYP BY BP-3/CATIONIC B-CD INCLUSION COMPLEX

High-yield pulp (HYP) has been widely used because of its unique properties. However, HYP is very easy to incur photo-yellowing due to its high content of lignin in the pulp, which has seriously limited its application in high-grade papers. The main purpose of this study is to improve the HYP brightness stability by coating inhibitor on the paper or adding it in wet-end. 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, abbreviated as BP-3, is a kind of ultraviolet absorber. It can dissolve in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone, but it cannot dissolve in water. In order to improve the solubility of BP-3 in water, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) or its derivates such as cationic β-CD was introduced, which can include many small hydrophobic organic molecules into its cavity by forming the inclusion complex. The BP-3/cationic β-CD complex was then used in HYP to improve its brightness stability. The results showed that the best inclusion conditions were as follows: the reaction temperature 50 °C and stirring for 4 h at high speed. It was found that brightness stability can be improved by either adding the inclusion complex at wet-end or coating it on the surface of handsheet, but the coating method is better than the wet-end one in terms of improving the brightness stability.
