CURRENT AND FUTURE BIOREFINERY SCENARIOS ADVANCED MATERIALS FROM WOODY COMPONENTS:CELLULOSE, HEMICELLULOSE,LIGNIN

With fossil resources becoming increasingly scarce, renewable resources have undergone a surge of interest as alternative sources of chemicals, materials and energy. Woody biomass as the main biosource consists of three main constituents in varying ratios: cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses. While cellulose utilization is well established in the pulp, paper and fiber industries, sustainable uses of lignin and hemicelluloses are still being sought. In this regard, modern biorefinery approaches have to address the utilization of all major components - not just cellulose, but also hemicelluloses and in particular lignin, and have to provide, if possible, a clean separation into the neat three main constituents, which in turn are the starting materials for future chemical and material production. The introductory part will discuss pros and cons of some biorefinery approaches with a focus on the usability of the obtained products for later processing. In the following, selected examples from the realm of cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses will serve to demonstrate the high potential of renewables as the source for advanced materials, bulk chemicals, and highly functionalized compounds as well: ultralightweight cellulose aerogels, ammonoxidized lignins (N-lignins) as artificial humic substances for soil improvement and long-term fertilization, hemicelluloses particles by supercritical processing for applications in medicine and cosmetics, and plant polysaccharides as sources for straightforward synthesis of heterocyclic organics.
