ACID PRE-EXTRACTION OF HEMICELLULOSES PRIOR TO ASPEN CTMP PROCESS
The effect of acid pre-extraction of hemicelluloses on Aspen (Populus tremuloides) chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) properties was investigated in this study. The aspen chips were press impregnated with dilute sulfuric acid and then cooked under various temperature and time. The cooked chips were pressed and impregnated with sulfite and then refined to produce CTMP pulps. The sulfuric acid pre-extraction resulted in a release of hemicelluloses and acetic acid, especially at the stage of second pressimpregnation. Compared with CTMP pulps without acid pre-extraction, the acid pre-extraction significantly reduced refining energy to a given freeness, and the pulps produced from acid pre-extracted chips have lower freeness, lower rejects, lower bulk, but higher physical strength properties at the similar refining energies.
