SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SUSTAINABLE CO-PRODUCTION OF CELLULOSIC ETHANOL AND BIOCHEMICALS FROM NON-FOOD BIOMASSES

formicobio? is a technology for the production of cellulosic ethanol for biofuels. The technology has been specially developed for nonfood raw materials (e.g. straws and other agricultural residues), and it is based on selective fractionation of biomass with a biosolvent containing formic acid. The technology avoids the main problems associated with other technologies developed for non-food raw materials and represents a true third-generation technology for the production of liquid biofuels. The technology enables co-production of biochemicals, such as acetic acid and furfural, which are used as a raw material in the production of paints, adhesives, and plastics, and as a solvent and raw material for resins. The present paper reviews the principle and key elements of the technology: selective fractionation of biomass with a biosolvent, enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose into glucose, efficient chemical recovery based solely on thermal separations, and recycling of water. The present paper also reports selected experiences from the operation of an industrial scale biorefinery based on the formicobio technology, including production of glucose and fermentation of glucose into ethanol. The present paper also discusses economics of production of cellulosic ethanol. Compared to other typical approaches for the production of cellulosic ethanol, co-production of ethanol and biochemicals by the formicobio technology gives 40% more sales revenues. Because cellulose has been purified before hydrolysis, enzyme and overall operating costs are also favorable.
